How could a people
In the midst of genocide
Still see beauty and feel joy

How could children
With fearful hearts and amputated limbs
Still sing, celebrate birthdays and play swing

How could the terrorised hum to drone sound
Turning the shrill of killing machines
Into heavenly music

How could a tortured face
Still beam with
The most beautiful smile

How could an orphan
Keep her eyes, shimmering in tenderness
and love
For humanity

How could a little girl who witness horrors
Retain faith, hope,
kindness and compassion

How could a boy who knew nothing about the sky
Except jets, bombs and death
Send his kite up to challenge F16

How could a mother who lost her eyes
Or her children
Still turn to God in gratitude
And pray

How could life
Push through death
Conquer and thrive

Victory is not measured by
The amount of death and destruction you cause
Rather it’s cherishing the light of your soul
